Big Al Pavlow is one of the most knowledgeable record collectors and yet virtually unknown to most of the people in the record collecting hobby. All of the big time collectors/dealers know and respect "the man who wrote the book on Rhythm and Blues". If your a friend of Al's, your a friend forever.

I first met Big Al back in 1974 or so. I had just moved to Rhode Island from Hartford, Ct. and didn't know a soul in the record collecting scene in Little Rhody. I will be writing an article on Al in "Echoes Of The Past" magazine and this will allow me to share with you my insights into one of the icons in record collecting. He was a Disc Jockey, a record store owner, a record label owner and an author during various stages of his life.

In this interview that I conducted back in 1988, you will hear from his own lips some of the experiences that Al had in his interesting life in music. The interview was intended to be aired on my radio show, but soon after completing it, I was transferred to Baltimore, Md. I forgot that I had it until recently I discovered it in one of my tape boxes. I'm proud to share a small glimpse of Big Al Pavlow one of my mentors along the way in this wacky hobby.

His long out of print masterpiece "The R&B Book" is again availabe and you can contact Al at the address listed herin. He tells me that his "Hot Charts" are also again in print and can be purchased.

Please see the links opposite and listen to my friend, Big Al Pavlow. The interview is presented in two parts, in MP3 format, and you can click on the appropriate links on the left.

In early 1990 I was working and living in Blatimore, MD. and I was able to secure a radio gig on WTMD-FM the voice of Towson State Univer07 sity in Towson, MD. The show gained steam slowly and the local collector community finially discoverd and supported the show.

In early 1991 the "Echoes Of The Past Show" was named 'the best oldies show' in greater Baltimore and from that point on we were on the radar screen. Thanks to assistance from Wayne Jones and Kenny Schreiber the show was a center of for the oldies scene in the Charm City.

On 8/17/91, I had the pleasure to share the mike with a legendary D.J. from the Baltimore/D.C area the great Dick Lillard. I was able to locate a tape of that show and I am pleased to share this with all of my friends from the Baltimore area and Dick's legion of fans. Sit back as listen to one of my proudest moments.

Nay had a strange call while on air with WTMD, presenting his "Echoes Of The Past" show. His caller said "Hey, you're playing my song!" Nay took that as a request for a favorite tune, until the caller identified himself as none other than Leroy Taylor and the song Nay was playing was actually his recording.

Nay soon invited Leroy to the studio and engineerd the show with slected tracks and accompanying interview. The interview opens with one of Leroy's unissued "Shrine Records" tracks "I Ain't Worried About You," and goes on to recount a brief recording history. Leroy had so much joy for being remembered and still admired. Nay also discovered the connection between Leroy and "The Winstons" and his backing group on "Shrine," The Kays.

During the interview Leroy brought in and played one of the hardest to find 45's of all - his "H & H" release of "If I" backed with the flip side "I'll Understand." The interview is presented in MP3 format and you can click on the appropriate links on the left.

Jan was invited to visit and interview Frankie Iovino of the Five Boroughs at Miami's Dino Pete's restaurant and night spot, while hosting his Soul Crusing Show on the DooWop Cafe. The interview was conducted live at Dino Pete's and music was added at the studio to complete the program.

The Five Boroughs are a truly unique contemporary doo-wop group. If you look at today's doo-wop groups, you usually have original doo-wop groups performing under their original names with a few of their original members. Or you have new groups of singers who were not around in the original days of doo-wop but who perform the music nonetheless.

Since their inception around 1986, the Five Boroughs have counted such great original doo-wopers as Tony Passalaqua (the Fascinators), Jimmy Gallagher (the Passions), Frank Iovino (the Bob Knight Four), and Charlie Notabartolo (The Casual Airs), among their membership.

During the interview Spanky and his son Dino added a few words about the local Miami venue that hosted doo wop with great dining.

Sonny Jordan is a true pioneer of DooWop. He was an original member of the "Supremes" that backed up Ruth McFadden and Bobby Mansfield, and recorded for the Old Town label. He was also a member of the "Bachelors" and "Montereys", both with legendary Dean Barlow as the front man. In 1958, he was the founding member of the “Five Delights” who also recorded as the "Mood Makers".

Born in Norfolk, VA, Sonny moved to the Bronx, NY at the age of nine. I met Sonny through a mutual acquaintance about twelve years ago and have since become the very good friends.
